Scholarship Application Information

The Ohio Nursery & Landscape Association is pleased to offer the Phil Kozel Memorial Scholarship Program. Scholarships are based on merit and achievement and are available to college students majoring in landscape, nursery production, or related horticulture subject areas and high school FFA students who have shown an interest in pursuing a major in landscape, nursery production, or related horticulture subject areas at a two- or four-year institution upon graduation from high school.

The ONLA President’s Scholarship, a $3,000 scholarship, is awarded to one college candidate from a pool of applicants, in addition to several $2,000 scholarships. Two $500 scholarships are awarded to high school FFA candidates.


Applications for 2020 Scholarships are Due Friday, September 27, 2019.


Application Requirements

College students enrolled full- or part-time in programs at the following schools are eligible to apply: The Ohio State University, The Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute, Kent State University-Salem, Clark State Community College, Owens Community College, Columbus State Community College, Cuyahoga Community College, Cincinnati State Technical & Community College, Hocking College and the University of Cincinnati.

FFA students who are granted scholarships from the ONLA will be required to submit a copy of their college acceptance letter, along with information detailing their school’s financial office and student account identification numbers, prior to receiving the scholarship funds. (ONLA will provide additional details to students who receive scholarships.)


Additional eligibility requirements are

·         Currently holds student membership in the ONLA

·         Noteworthy participation in outside activities

·         Interest in a career in the horticulture industry

·         Need for financial assistance

·         Submission of all requested application materials by the deadline (incomplete applications are disqualified)


Additional College Requirements

·         Has served, or will serve prior to graduation, an internship relative to the horticulture industry

·         At least one quarter or semester remaining following the Fall 2019 semester



FFA Scholarship applicants who have been selected for scholarships will be invited to accept their awards during the Ohio High School Landscape Olympics on Friday, October 11, 2019 at OSU/ATI in Wooster, Ohio.

College applicants will be notified in December, 2019 if they have been accepted and awards will be mailed.


Application Instructions

Applications are due September 27, 2019. Along with completing the online application below, applicants must submit the following:

·         Statement of purpose (describe yourself and your plans for the future; include your interest in the green industry and your work in the industry; describe your career goals; note any pertinent personal history (awards/honors received, school or community activities related to the green industry, professional memberships, industry certifications earned, etc.)

·         High school or college transcripts, which can be unofficial and do not require notarization. If the applicant is a first-year college student, a high school transcript is acceptable.

·         Résumé

·         Recommendation letter- MAIL TO: ONLA Office, Attn: Scholarships, 72 Dorchester Square, Westerville, Ohio 43081. Letter should be on school letterhead from a horticulture instructor, FFA advisor, principal or guidance counselor
