The Plant Selection Committee
(PSC) of The Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association (ONLA) was
appointed as a standing committee in 1969. There was little activity
during the years of 1969 through 1972, and no tours were taken.
Activity consisted primarily of a general report on major collections
of plants in the Secrest Arboretum, Wooster, Ohio; disease resistant
flowering crabapples; and the extent of winter injury on some
ornamental plants.
The Plant Selection Committee's
goal is to try to single out several plants each year to recommend
to the ONLA membership in particular and the general nursery
trade in general. The selections are made with the belief that
the selected plants have undeveloped marketing potential.
The committee makes a trip
each year to visit nurseries, arboreta and public gardens. During
the annual field trips, the committee spends time at the end
of each day discussing the pros and cons of the plants observed
that day. Besides their extensive notes, committee members take
photographs of each plant believed to have the most potential.
A consolidated list of all
viewed plants is then voted on resulting in a selection of plants
to recommend. |
