Ohio Green Industry Position Statement
Ohio’s Nursery and Landscape Industry is supportive of the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) eradication program.
We agree with the recommendations of the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Center for Plant Health Science and Technology to cut all host trees within a ¼ mile radius of infested trees. We fully support the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s adoption of these measures. A cut of this magnitude is advisable because ground surveys are only 30% effective. Tree climb surveys are more accurate (60%), but climbing is a slow and tedious process with climbers only able to scale a handful of trees per day. While we know this number of trees seems severe, science indicates that an aggressive approach is the best route to preserving Ohio’s abundant forest land. Cutting only infested trees requires an unrealistic survey and treatment plan, allows ALB to spread and infest for decades, and makes eradication unattainable.
If ALB is suspected, please contact a local county extension agent or call 888-644-6322.
