The Ohio Certified Nursery Technician (OCNT) program has three areas of specialization: Garden Center, Grower and Landscape. Each area of specialty has its own study manual and test. Once a person passes all three tests, they are given the status of Ohio Certified Nursery Technician - Master Technician.

Garden Center

The retail nursery is the information center on which homeowners have come to rely for dependable horticultural expertise. In order to provide sound scientific horticultural advice to customers, the garden center employee must be knowledgeable in a wide variety of subjects including plant identification, proper plant usage, plant health, soils, turfgrass management, landscape design, and proper planting and maintenance of nursery stock and more.

Grower

The grower is the base of the green industry. In order to have healthy plants to sell, the nursery employee must be knowledgeable in a wide variety of subjects including plant identification, plant development, plant health, growing and harvesting techniques, plant nutrients, pest and disease elimination, plant maintenance and more.

Landscape

The public, architects and contractors have come to rely on landscape contractors and installers for dependable landscape construction techniques and horticultural expertise. In order to provide sound scientific, horticultural advise and proper installation, the landscape installer must be knowledgeable in a wide variety of areas including plant identification, plant usage, plant health, soils, turfgrass management, use of pesticides, construction techniques, design, sales and more.

Master

The Master Technician status is granted to all of those who successfully hold all three of the certification areas of specialization. Once a person achieves the Master status, they will be given special diplomas and patches signifying this accomplishment. A person must keep all three specializations current in order to keep the Master designation.
